A forward of something important

It may in the end be more important than if the bishop of Rome or each bishop in his diocese individually is the Successor of St Peter.

This too might be good to quote:

Politics drawn from the Very Words of Holy Scripture

Article II
On religion, inasmuch as it is the good of nations and of civil society

1st Proposition
In the ignorance and corruption of mankind, a few principles of religion have always been preserved

It is true that St. Paul, speaking to the peoples of Lycaonia, said "that God had let all the nations proceed in their own paths,"1 as if he had abandoned them entirely to themselves and to their own thoughts regarding the worship of god, leaving them no guiding principle. He adds, however, in the same place, "that he did not allow himself to go without witness, lavishing gifts from heaven, giving rain and weather proper for bearing fruit, filling our hearts with fitting nourishment and joy."2 This he would not have told these ignorant people, if despite their barbarism, they had retained no idea of divine power and goodness.

These barbarians also demonstrate a knowledge of the deity, to whom they wished to make sacrifice.3 And this kind of tradition of divinity and sacrifice, and the worship established to recognize it, is found from the earliest times so universally among nations possessing some form of organization, that it can only have come from Noah and his descendants.

Thus, although the same St. Paul, speaking to the Gentiles converted to the faith, told them "that they were previously without God in this world,"4 he does not mean that they were absolutely without a deity, since elsewhere he reproaches the Gentiles for "allowing themselves, to be drawn to the worship of deaf and dumb idols."5

If, then, he also reproaches the Athenians6 for their times of ignorance, when they lived without knowledge of God, it is simply to tell them that they had only a confused knowledge of God, riddled with error, although they were not entirely destitute of the knowledge of God, since they adored him unknowingly,7 and in their ignorance paid him some sort of worship.

Similar ideas of the deity are found throughout the world, from ancient times;8 this is why there is no race without religion, at least among those are not absolutely barbaric, without civility and without polity.

There is something to be said for not praying even with heterodox Christians, though ... not to mention Protestants, Mormons, Jehova's Witnesses, Jews, Moslems, Hindoos, Buddhists ...

And it has been said very well in French, by Abbé Lorans, FSSPX:

Nous ne prierons pas ensemble à Assisi

We will not be praying together in Assisi, we will join our prayers to those of persecuted Christians is the gist of what he says.
